Drea's Artist Statement

My creations are much more than just a physical piece of art–they are an extension of myself. Like a dragonfly or butterfly, each work transitions through many stages, until it emerges as beautiful art. Transformation is at the heart of my process.
People often ask how I come up with my subject matter, but truthfully, I rarely begin a painting with a fully formed plan. For me, creating is a patient journey of emotion and discovery–a continuous process of evolving.
By the time my artwork is completed I have developed a very personal connection with it. While I may know the meaning and story behind its creation, I don't feel that is the most important thing for the viewer to take away. I truly enjoy all the different reactions, interpretations, and discussions that result. I'll never say what someone else sees is "wrong"– because in that moment, it's no longer about my story, but what the art awakens in you. That is the beauty and magic of art.
My passion lies in creating and sparking something within my viewers...to express emotion, evoke feelings, and intrigue the mind. I love to get people talking and thinking. I aim to make art that feels timeless and relatable, regardless of age, race, gender, or belief.
Color is essential to my visual language, and implementation of a vibrant palette is very important to me. I purposely play up the contradiction of bright bold colors paired with intriguing, unique, and sometimes dark subject matters. At first glance, a piece might feel light or joyful, but look again, and you might find something unexpected. I love that moment of shift, when perception transforms... like dragonfly wings catching light in a new way, my art is meant to invite discovery.
